Seven Years.

When we began this journey, I don’t think we saw it lasting seven years. There had been some setbacks, but we’re still limping along, proudly fumbling and stumbling through varied selections of porn. For this year, we decided to do something different, and cover the BLUSH San Francisco Porn Film Festival.

Since Kage and I spent more time than usual but not as much as we would have preferred on this film festival, we’ll start with rapid-fire two or three sentence reviews this week.

Out of the sixty-nine films, we watched over 30 of them. We will not tell you which ones, and we may not review all of them. Did you attend BLUSH? What were your favourites? Let us know!

JUST FOR PISS
A male fetish model ponders his career in porn, modeling, and art. He gives flaccid advice such as “Find people to collaborate with”. The visuals are unimpressive, and it felt more like a broad advertisement for Just For Fans rather than his own art and product. I didn't love it.

CRIMINAL CRAVING
This is more like it.

A woman comes home and takes a shower while a man in a balaclava breaks in. While masks and hidden identity can be fun, I think we can all agree that the balaclava is perhaps the least sexy mask there is.

The camera lovingly roams over her curves as she showers. She gets on her bed and plays on her phone when she sees a reflection of the intruder. Instead of panic, she plays.

This is filmed very nicely, with great colours. The use of moisture of all things is really well done and we see how wet the lady is. There is a single moment when the woman extends her hand and offers a come-hither finger with such grace it’s unbelievable. Highlight of the film.

A few things bring this down, unfortunately. One is the runtime. This easily could have been fifteen minutes, or even ten. It needed more time to build up and breathe. Second is the ending, which is tonal whiplash. But overall, it’s a fun little experience that understays its welcome.

SHE AND HER GOOD VIBERATIONS
An animated excursion! A lonely lady receives a new toy. It takes her to the highest highs, but then, she’s too insatiable and it dies on her. She feels betrayed and abandoned, but then has a funeral for her Battery Operated Boyfriend, then it… takes her to heaven?

Did she die, too?

Confusing, but there’s obvious effort because indie animation is always effort. An example of a good premise that runs on too long.

OBJET 0001
A woman jerks off soap in a public bathroom. Leave some for the rest of us. Sudsy, soapy delight about a woman getting dirty and clean. Unique, weird, stylish. Okay.

GUMMIBOOT
I love the message behind this movie. There’s a couple. It’s the man’s birthday and his girlfriend wants to do some water sports because he mentioned it once in passing. So, she gets a raft and thinks it’ll be more fun with some set-dressing. But she’s pee-shy. Time goes on and their adorable relationship begins to fray. She asks why he’s interested in water sports and he tells her, giving us the film’s thesis and it’s wonderful. Eventually, water sports are achieved.

The couple is darling and their chemistry is amazing. We were rooting for them and I hated to see them fight. It runs a little long, and it's a little confusing with scenes just stopping and starting, but it’s an easy 4 out of 5.

AGAIN
A woman’s body and sense of pleasure is explored through crystal balls. It’s artsy and pretty and short. Pleasant and brief.

This is just a sampling of what we watched. Next week we will bring you more, including one very short film that really made us think.

Highlight: Personally, I found Gummiboot and Criminal Craving to be the stand outs of this bunch

Lowlight: Just For Piss was a disappointment.
