"I think this is what they call The Call of the Wild."

Five college-age students and a cabin in the woods. It’s a tale as old as time and it transcends cultures. We all have a cabin, we all have a wood, and we all have a cave. Sometimes it’s the cave from the Dave Franco/Allison Brie cosmic horror film Together. Sometimes it’s the cave that so succinctly described evolution in Ice Age. Sometimes it’s overgrown with crystals and is more of a fortress of solitude like in various adaptations of Superman. This time, it was the cave in Sex Trip.

Five friends go into the jungle-y woods, or wooded jungle on a camping trip. One meek friend, Jane (played by Cheena Dizon) goes off to explore.

Jane is the epitome of "If only I didn't have these glasses and this ponytail, then maybe they’d notice me", and as two of her camp-mates get down and dirty, Jane comes across a cave with strange, naughty paintings on the walls. Figures tangled up in various lecherous poses. Depictions of full on penetration, and then Jane gets so wet. Because a drizzle of cave water is dripping down on her.

Her friends find her in the cave, but she has become changed. Gone is the meek good-girl, and now she’s a seductive temptress, sowing jealousy between her friends. One by one, Jane gives herself to her buddies, until they all enter the cave one final time and engage in a five-person orgy together, after which they agree what happens in the cave stays in the cave.

There’s something strange about this film. Both Kage and myself sensed it but we couldn’t quite figure out what it was. All the sexual content was simulated, sometimes very poorly. We wondered if that was merely a byproduct of what the performers were willing to do, or if it was all that they were legally allowed to get away with regarding Filipino media. We can’t say.

While the majority of the on-screen action leaves us wanting, we agreed that, had we come across this film in the 80s while channel surfing, our teenage brains would have crowned Sex Trip to be the best movie ever.

And there are some good shots. There’s a sequence of one of the women laying in the stream, her head pillowed on an ergonomically considerate rock, with the rush of water flowing against her, over her, and stimulating her body. It’s a very honest moment, and filmed nicely.

When we get to the five-person love scene, it’s presented in slow motion, and the camera lingers long and lovingly over the commingled bodies. There was even some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it guy/guy content. Hips smack against rear ends, and strike ripples to move across flesh at an achingly slow pace, all set to an appropriately subdued score. There has to be real care and attention to detail to pull off the magic trick that is simulated sex while also being courageous enough to let the camera stay there and watch.

As we've seen with movies like We Are the Flesh and Behind the Green Door, there is a very, very wrong way to do slow-mo sex. Sex Trip is on the Antichrist and Elemental side, the side of artistic quality.

One cannot, in good conscience, laud the classic films such as Caligula or Basic Instinct or Fatal Attraction, all of which had simulated intimacy, then scoff at this. Some film maker, somewhere had a vision, and worked with what he had to make the art he wanted out into the world. Sometimes limitations bring out the best, in both an artist and the art. Sometimes the mere suggestion of a penis entering a vagina is more interesting and stimulating than the actual visual, even when it’s hidden away in a cave, where only the brave and curious can come across it.

Highlight: The climactic slow motion cave orgy scene

Lowlight: Nothing is explained. There are some forest spirits or something but what do they want? Why? We never know.
