"Want me to give you a handy in the taxidermy room?"

That cackling you hear? Don’t worry about that. It’s just me reacting with such excitement that Halloween Trick & Treat is once again upon us! What are you planning to watch this spooky season? Well, this year we have a small hoard of some delectable, devilish films to keep you entertained this hallowed month. So let’s begin.

As per usual, when we cross over into one themed month into a new themed month, we like to start things off with a transitional film, something that bridges the gap between where we were and where we’re going.

Since last month was Lilith Likes To Watch’s anniversary, we’re going to kick off with Birthday Slasher!

It's college goth girl Emmy's birthday, (played by Liz Jordan) and her friend Sadie (played by Myra Moans) convinces her to forgo an evening of horror movies in favour of a birthday bash with her and the boys (played by Parker Ambrose and Lucky Fate). No sooner do the guests arrive when they learn there's a killer on the loose!

First of all, let’s list off all that is good. The casting is great. Liz Jordan is a delectably tasty birthday goth and Myra Moans looks like someone cloned Dakota Johnson and placed her into a different kind of dirty film than the ones we all know Miss Johnson from. If anybody makes a Madam Web porn parody, she should be the only name considered for the starring role.

The guys are fine. Parker Ambrose is appropriately skinny to portray a college boy believably.

Where the film inarguably shines is the costumes and the set design. The titular slasher is in a cheap hooded skull rubber mask that one could buy at any of the numerous Spirit Halloween stores popping up, but what makes it eerie is the use of set and lighting. The masked slasher peers through the mosaiced glass of a door, backlit by a red glow. Or the slasher is outside, breathing fog onto the widow and tracing a heart onto it.

When Sadie gifts Emmy a slinky, lacy black dress, once more texture makes the whole shot shine. The dark lace juxtaposed with her fishnets and wild black mane of hair is a perfect picture.

While making sure the house is locked tight from any would-be slashers, Emmy and Scott end up in her bedroom and on her bed. Again, set design saves the day. It’s a great little goth bedroom, with a lacy purple lampshade, ornate skulls and moody lighting. This movie looks great.

But, it’s just over forty minutes long and after over twenty minutes of uninterrupted sex between Scott and Emmy, I began to worry. There was only ten minutes left. I guess Sadie or Tara aren’t going to get nailed? We’re not going to get a Revenge of the Nerds style misunderstanding involving the slasher? And the slasher isn’t going to, you know, slash? Even the trailer showed scenes we had yet to see and seemed too numerous to fit into five minutes.

Concerned, I looked to make sure we weren’t just watching part one of four, since the big studios like to chop up their offerings into several parts. But nope. This was a one and done shot. So, we began to grow confused and annoyed. Is this just sex? I was here for a sexy slasher film, man!

Finally the slasher makes a move, and a chase ensues. Kage and I are frustrated because this film is constructed strangely. Keep in mind this is directed by industry veteran Seth Gamble. If anyone should know how a porno should flow from scene to scene to scene, it's him.

Rest assured, the power of friendship prevails, and the slasher is finally unmasked, and I’ll admit, that kind of made me forgive this film's shortcomings because I guess I’m a sucker for platonic love.

If you want to watch a hot goth girl get railed, and like rubber skull masks, then this will probably do it for you, but if you wanted something more like Halloween or Scream, you might be left without any shivers.

Highlight: The concept was solid and the mood was great. Excellent use of ripped fishnets.

Lowlight: It felt like the first act of a longer movie, one that had an actual slasher and not just a 60 second chase scene.

LILITH'S SCORE: 3/5 - A Halloween Treat, but it could have been much stickier and sweeter.

Until next time, my voracious voyeurs. I’m Lilith, and I’m always watching.
