A little while ago, before everything went to shit, there was a thread on The Bird App listing monsterfucker movies. I think this is what I'll miss the most about that place, it shared the wealth. And that wealth was porn.
Of course, I added my fledgling wisdom to the conversation and then coveted the thread in anticipation of… Monster Lover May!
What better place to begin with what is, without question, one of the sexiest monster flicks to have ever been filmed…
The Canadian Creature Feature: Splice!
Clive (Played by Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Played by Sarah Polley) are two edgy rock star scientists who are playing with the very fabric of life. Their ambition exceeds their ethics and they use a variety of DNA to make a new species they name Dren.
They quickly learn raising a child ain't easy!
In the canon of horror movie monsters, Dren is wonderfully realized. She's just familiar enough to be non threatening and just alien enough to be uncanny. And she is brought to perfect life through her actress, Delphine Chanéac. She is so incredibly bird-like in her movements and the sound engineers gave her the most appropriate little chirps and trills to accompany her physicality. The whole thing gives Dren a playful, inquisitive nature. She's spritely and whimsical, a manic pixie dream girl by way of David Lynch or Del Toro.
Of course we want to fuck her.
And, more importantly, she wants to fuck.
Could we debate the morals of this? Sure. Is it problematic? Probably. Do I care? No. The movie set out to ask big questions and put forth hypothesis and theories. All that's there, but it's just shallow enough to be able to turn off your brain and enjoy the pretty.
The creature effects are outstanding. Yes, there is some imperfect CGI gloss that gives away the trick around the bioengineering homunculus Fred and Ginger, and around infant Dren (played by Abigail Chu), but it holds up well overall. Dren is a complete creature through every phase of her development, from infancy, where she resembles some sort of hairless mouse with a pug's snoot, to her toddler years, to mature and every stage in between.
The acting from Adrian Brody and Sarah Polly is fine. I'm not sure I buy them as scientists but whatever. Besides, we're certainly not here for Clive and his weird haircut.
So, the sex scene between Dren and her father figure Clive. It's good. Dren seduces Clive but I'm pretty sure he consents, and Dren certainly does! She uses her feet-hands to pull Clive's shirt off which is very fun, and in a moment of climax she bares her wings in a way akin to a mating dance. Mating dances are more a male action. Funny thing that.
OK, fine, let's talk about it.
It seems Delphine Chanéac also portrayed male Dren. Great job. Both designs are very distinct and they completely transformed the performer's features.
To my dismay, I didn't find Male Dren appealing at all. There was something just… unsexy about it. Too alien? Not alien enough? I sort of hated the skin texture? Not enough muscles? I'm not sure what it was, but it didn't do it for me. Which is tragic.
But femDren more than made up for it.
Do I recommend this? Sure. I would. Though it's not very explicit when it comes to the dirty stuff, it’s hardly a chore to spend an hour with Dren, whether she’s playing dress up, or eating rabbit raw.
Like I said last year, we monsterfuckers don't get a whole lot from the silver screen so we have to take what we can.
And Dren gives what she has without shame.
Best Moment: Dren gets to fuck everyone!
Worst Moment: Male Dren was unappealing and also I’m unclear if he fucked Elsa with his tail, or just paralyzed her with his venom. Did he even have a penis?
